Samsung Blackout Explanation Fails to Convince Experts
Samsung Electronics executives at Samsung¡¯s semiconductor plant in Giheung, Gyeonggi Province after a mystery blackout halted the operation of six production lines there early this month.
Samsung Electronics has tentatively concluded that a strange blackout at its semiconductor plant in Giheung, Gyeonggi Province was caused by problems with facilities supplying power to six production lines. The power outrage paralyzed the Giheung plant for several hours on Aug. 3. However, the company did not say exactly what the problem was, and some outsiders suspect the chipmaker in fact failed to identify the cause of the problem despite the passage of three weeks.

Samsung Electronics said Wednesday it reached the tentative conclusion that the blackout at six production lines occurred due to problems with power supply facilities. The firm said power monopoly KEPCO was not to blame for the outrage and there was nothing wrong with the plant management system. The blackout was accidental, it added. However, the statement did not add much to explanations offered three weeks ago. One Samsung official said the blackout was ¡°as mysterious as a car abruptly accelerating.¡±

Song Myung-sup, an analyst at CJ Investment and Securities, said it was imperative for Samsung to get to the bottom of the blackout, since none have occurred at other chip plants worldwide that run on similar operation structures. A Hynix Semiconductor staffer said the company¡¯s own simulation of a similar case -- problems with power supply facilities causing a blackout and bring several production lines to a halt simultaneously -- proved that this kind of power cut was ¡°very unusual¡±, suggesting Samsung¡¯s explanation is not good enough.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is mulling measures to prevent a recurrence such as installing additional power transformers and power supply lines at the Giheung plant.
